You are invited to a virtual 5K on February 23 & 24! What is a virtual 5K? It is a 5K you can run or walk on your treadmill, at the gym, in your neighborhood, or wherever you are, but we all do it on the very same weekend. Doug Cassaro, founder of I Run Because started the trend on Twitter and he coined the event the #TwitterRoadRace. If you have a Twitter account, check out the hashtag to see all the chatter. You do not need a Twitter account to participate though. Hundreds of runners and walkers around the world cover 5K wherever they are and report the results on Doug’s website. Racers from 4 countries are already signed up! The event is complete with a t-shirt for purchase and awards for best finishers. The best part of it though is community. I participated in the first of Doug’s 6 virtual road races on a snowy day in January 2012. Although I ran by myself like any other day, there was something special about knowing that so many others were running and walking the same day with me. People reported their times on the website and excitedly chatted about their race on Twitter, some reporting for duty from the other side of the globe!
The February 2013 virtual 5K is going to be even more special than usual because Doug has joined with #plankaday for the event. All runners and walkers are asked to snap a celebratory plank pic at the end of their race and post either on Twitter or the #plankaday Facebook page. Best plank pic gets a free #plankaday t-shirt, so get those plank pics posted! The crazier your plank pic the better! Oh, and for every participant who finishes the race, Doug has agreed to plank for 1 sec! Let’s sic him with a looong plank! Still don’t know what a plank is yet? Click here for crying out loud.
